Domestic vs commercial cylinders: what is the difference?

Domestic and commercial cylinders differ in size, valve type and the regulator each requires. They are not interchangeable. Fitting a domestic regulator to a commercial valve, or the reverse, gives the wrong pressure to the appliance and is unsafe.

The two are built for different draw rates, and the fittings reflect that.

Why can you not swap the regulator?

Because the regulator controls the pressure reaching your appliance, and each type is matched to its valve and to the demand it expects.

A regulator that does not seat correctly on a valve it was not made for will leak. One that seats but delivers the wrong pressure will run the burner outside what it was designed for.

Can a home use a commercial cylinder?

Only with the correct commercial regulator, a proper ventilated place for it to stand away from heat, and no need to carry it regularly. The gas is the same; the fittings and the handling are not.

For most households a domestic size in a good position is the better choice.

Can a business use domestic cylinders?

For a small stall with one burner, a domestic cylinder with a connected spare is often perfectly sensible. For a tandoor or a multi-burner range it is not — the draw is too high and the changeovers too frequent.

What decides which one you need?

Your burner hours and your draw rate, not the label. Work out daily consumption from your burner hours, then choose the size that gets you through your delivery cycle with margin.

Whichever you choose, use the regulator made for that valve. That part is not a preference.
